Sept. 12, 2018 Stingray News

Dear Stevenson Families,

We are excited to welcome our full-time Engagement Facilitator to Stevenson! Joey Ordonez was born in El Paso, TX and attended Willow Glen High School in San Jose before going onto the Oregon Institute of Technology where he earned his degree in psychology.  Joey later received an MA in Art Education from Phoenix University. You will see Joey out at recess and lunch as well as up in the front office. Please feel free to say hello to him!

Joey Ordonez

My ten years of experience at Graham Middle School have focused on educational program planning,

working with at-risk students, and developing programs to address inequities in education to ensure

academic success for all students. I am bilingual, fluent in Spanish and have been an English language

learner teacher. I am experienced working in a fast-paced environment with teams of educational

administrators, teachers and parents to support students and resolve problems. In particular, I have been

responsible for developing and leading a number of educational programs that create mentorship

opportunities for at-risk students, educational events that promote higher education for students, and

events that provide resources for parents who have often been overlooked in the educational process. I’m

happy to now be the new School Community Engagement Facilitator at Stevenson Elementary School!

Regular school attendance is required by the state law, and is included in the District’s Local Control Accountability plan (LCAP) and Dashboard. State law requires MVWSD to send a letter to parents after three unexcused absences and/ or tardies over 30 minutes.   Letters also inform parents of next steps and any resources or procedures in place to help their family get their child to school regularly. The state, county, and district are monitoring attendance, both excused and unexcused absences because the goal is for students to be in school as often as possible.  Our schools’ goals are a 97% attendance rate. For more information, click here.

What’s an Excused vs. Not Excused absence?  Illness, doctor’s appointments, bereavement, and certain religious exercises are excused absences.  All other reasons are not considered excused. Good attendance will help your children do well in school and in life, so please help them make good choices. For more information, click here.
