Dear Stingray Parents and Guardians,


The start of the school year is less than one week away! Our stingray staff and teachers this week have been hard at work preparing and planning to welcome our students back to school virtually this year.  Please be sure to take a few minutes to read through our newsletter this week. There is a lot of important information about ClassZoom Socials, materials distribution this Friday, and the start of the school year. If you have any questions please contact me, our front office, or our teachers. We want to make sure that you and your child are ready for the first day of school.

Rayland Sta. Maria-Asuncion - SecretaryPicture of Rayland Asuncion


Rayland Sta. Maria-Asuncion is delighted to join the Stevenson Elementary community. She has fifteen years of experience working in school environments. In her previous role, Rayland played an instrumental role in the overall management of a lunch and extended day program. She also worked closely with campus leadership to help maintain a standard of excellence. She believes that a school should be a safe, caring community where children can blossom and grow. Rayland looks forward to meeting all students and parents, and becoming part of the warm, family culture!


Kristy Ju - First Grade Teacher

Kristy Ju is thrilled to be joining the Stevenson Elementary family as a first-year teacher. She recently graduated from San Jose State University with her Masters In Curriculum and Instruction. Kristy student-taught in MVWSD at Bubb Elementary School where she was able to build relationships with the students and the community. She is enthusiastic about sharing a love of learning and creating a positive and joyful educational experience for her students. 



Lauren Alessio - 2nd Grade Teacher

Lauren Alessio is thrilled to be joining the Stevenson Elementary School community for her first year of teaching. She graduated from San Jose State University with her Masters in Education-with an emphasis in Instruction and Curriculum. She completed her student teaching in a first grade classroom as well as in a â…˜ combination classroom! Her favorite part of teaching is building authentic and long lasting relationships with students and families. Lauren is excited to join the PACT community!


Mikayla Richardson - 2nd Grade Teacher

Mikayla Richardson is excited to be joining the Stevenson PACT community this year! She taught fourth grade at Mistral for the past three years. Mikayla earned her Masters in Education from Stanford University. Mikayla is passionate about science and environmental education, and loves to create projects that integrate science learning. She is looking forward to meeting students and families, and building a caring classroom community in which all students have meaningful learning experiences. 


Chryssi Blackwell - SPED Resource Teacher

Chryssi Is thrilled to be joining Stevenson families this school year. Chryssi was a parent in the Alum Rock School District who helped open 3 small autonomous schools of choice. At Alum Rock, she became a para-educator working in the district, in many different types of classrooms, that supported many different types of learners. Over the 10 years she spent there, she fell in love with helping students and at the urging of staff and friends she earned her Ed. Specialist teaching credential. In 2011, she made the leap to MVWSD and had been a Crittenden Panther until today. During her 9 years at Crittenden she taught SDC, Resource, was an Inclusion Specialist, and Co-Taught Gen. Ed. ELA and Math. Today I am fortunate and excited to be returning to my roots of small schools of choice! 


Taraneh Ahmadi - School and Community Engagement Facilitator (SCEF)

Taraneh is looking forward to serving as Stevenson Elementary’s SCEF this year. Taraneh brings a lot of experience in developing meaningful and purposeful partnerships between academic institutions and the students and families it serves. With a background in Public Health, Taraneh applies childhood and education based research to support institutions in helping families be authentically engaged in improving school environments and academic performance. Most recently, Taraneh worked in this capacity with Cambridge Public Schools (Cambridge, MA) and the federally funded Early Head Start Program (Somerville, MA). Taraneh is excited about meeting your families and looks forward to hearing from you. 


Brittany Thornton - Instructional Coach

Brittany Thornton (formerly Brittany Sternberg) is over the moon excited to serve as an Instructional Coach this school year! She recently graduated with her Masters in Educational Leadership from Santa Clara University. Brittany has served as an educator for 12 years and is dedicated to researching and implementing best reading instruction practices. As an Instructional Coach she hopes to learn how to best support teachers and students both in distance learning and in person instruction. She loves to receive snail mail and is always open to communication. Brittany is so happy to continue to serve the Stevenson community!


ClassZoom Socials! - This Wednesday and Thursday

Our teachers are really excited to meet the students in their classroom this year! We wish we were able to see each other at our annual class posting social. This year, each teacher is hosting a ClassZoom Social to welcome our Stingrays. Teachers have sent an email with information on the date and time for their ClassZoom Social. If you did not receive a Zoom invite, please contact your child’s teacher. 


Materials Distribution

We will have our Chromebooks, supplies, and curriculum consumables distribution this Friday, August 14th from 10:00am-4:00pm. Please see the information below on the process for picking up your child’s materials. Please note, It is likely that not all supply shipments will come in at the same time. Therefore, parents may be asked to pick up supplies at several distribution dates, in order to ensure students have items soon after delivery. Thank you in advance for your patience if there is a need for multiple distribution dates. 

Materials will include:

  • Curriculum consumables

  • Student supplies

    • Pencils; Sharpener; Scissors; Glue sticks; Markers; Crayons or Colored pencils; Highlighters; White board sleeves (sheet protectors), markers, and eraser; Notebook(s) and journal(s) (depending on grade); Drawing and/or construction paper (particularly for K-2 first week projects); A container/bag; Eraser; Index Cards; Paper (Blank, lined, and/or graph); Pens; Rule; Headset; and Sticky Notes


Materials will be placed in a plastic bag and will be available for pick up on Friday, August 14th between 10:00am-4:00pm. Pick-up procedures will be in accordance with our county social distancing guidelines. 


Pick-up Procedures

Car Pick-up

  • Cars will enter the parking lot and stop near the front of the MUR.

  • Car windows are to remain up. Only if needed, please remember to keep 6 ft. distance for communication.

  • Parents will place a paper sign up in their car that includes their child's grade level and first & last name clearly written for a staff member to read. 

  • A staff member will then locate the child's bag in the MUR.

  • Parents will pop open or unlock the trunk of the car.

  • Staff will then place the bag of materials in the trunk.


Walk-In Procedures

  • A sign will be placed near the front office for parents walking to get student materials. There will also be markings on the ground for 6 ft. social distancing.

  • Parents will wait at the indicated sign.

  • A staff member will be 6 ft. away and ask for the child's grade level and  first & last name.

  • A staff member will then locate the student's bag and place the bag on a table at a safe distance.

  • Parent will then pick up the bag.


First Day of School - Minimum Day

The first day of school is Monday, August 17th!

School starts at 8:30am and ends at 11:45am


Distance Learning Dashboard

We will continue to be updating our Distance Learning Dashboards every Friday evening. Each classroom will have a dashboard that outlines the lessons for the week ahead. The Dashboard will include a link to your child’s Google Classroom that will have all the assignments and activities. Please note that you will need your child’s account information to access the Google Classroom.

Wednesdays - Asynchronous lessons school day. Students check-in on Zoom with their classroom teacher at the beginning and end of the school day.


Attendance and Absences

Even though we are in distance learning, we are still in school.  Daily attendance is required. At the beginning of the school day, teachers will have a Zoom check in meeting to take attendance and connect with students.

If your child will be absent and not able to attend Zoom instruction, please contact the front office by phone or email to inform the school of your child’s absence.


School/District Enrollment

Most of you registered your children in February, and we understand that your plans might have changed since then. Please take a moment to reply only if your children will not be attending Stevenson Elementary School. It will be a great help to our staff, other students, and their families as we prepare for the 2020-21 school year.

Childcare

During the time of COVID-19 and Distance Learning, MVWSD has partnered with providers Right at School, YMCA and Newton to provide on-campus, fee-based childcare with prioritization for the children of full-time essential workers. MVWSD students in grades TK-5 may enroll. 


Please note that these are District partners, not MVWSD programs. You may contact the providers with specific questions about their programs and their health and safety protocols. Childcare subsidies may be available for parents through the state of California. Please ask Right at School, YMCA and Newton at time of registration.

Cuidado de niños

Durante el tiempo de COVID-19 y el aprendizaje a distancia, MVWSD se ha asociado con los proveedores Right at School, YMCA y Newton para proporcionar cuidado infantil en el campus y basado en tarifas, con prioridad para los hijos de trabajadores esenciales a tiempo completo. Meals and Payments

Starting Aug. 17, paid and free and reduced price meals (grab and go during MVWSD Distance Learning) will be available at all school sites for students who registered last year for free and reduced price meals and the National School Lunch program, and full price meals will be available for students who have paid in advance online or have sent a check (including child’s school, child’s name, grade, teacher) to Food Service, Crittenden Middle School, 1701 Rock St., Mountain View, CA 94043.


Free or reduced price meal benefit status from last year can be used to pay for lunches until Sept. 30. We can assist new applicants in applying for free or reduced price meal benefits through the National Lunch Program and can process applications quickly.  The 2020-21 online application deadline is September 21, 2020.  No citizenship information is collected during the application process. Just as in the past, you will need to reapply annually.   Please go to the following website to apply online today.  http://www.ezmealapp.com (or paper applications are available at Gabriela Mistral Elementary School’s lunch service until Aug. 15). Meal payment:  Full or reduced price meals should be paid online throughout the year at www.EZschoolPay.com.  New this year: You must pay in advance online. No cash or checks will be accepted in person at the meal sites or school offices. No credit will be extended. Full price meals cost $3.50 for lunch and $2.50 for breakfast (reduced price is 40¢ for lunch and 30¢ for breakfast).
