MVWSD News

We want to hear from you! District surveys are coming soon

The MVWSD Climate Survey opens on Monday, Nov. 5 for all staff, all parents and students in grades 5 and 7. Additionally, students in grades 6 and 8 will take a social-emotional survey of critical skills and mindsets that enable school success. Your responses provide information beyond test scores that helps us improve our schools.

This survey is administered online through Panorama Education. Your answers to the survey are confidential and compiled by Panorama, a third party. Your honest feedback is very important. Personal results will not be identifiable.

In addition to completing LCAP requirements, the data will help inform work on the District's strategic plan goals and provide longitudinal data for year-to year comparisons. The questions are drawn from an archive of research-based questions in broad theme areas of engagement, instruction, school safety and school environment. We will be asking students in grades 5 and 7, parents and staff members about their impressions of our District sites. We will be asking students in grades 6 and 8 about how they persist, think and feel about school. This is a great opportunity for us to get feedback and continue to work together to improve our schools.

We look forward to seeing the results and working with the leadership of our bargaining units and staff to look for ways we can continue to improve. Look for an email invitation in your inbox on Nov. 5. from Panorama Education. The subject line will be: "Request for your feedback!"

Thank you in advance for your input.

School Boundaries
The Board of Trustees last spring approved new school boundaries, to be enacted next year/in the 2019-20 school year, to redistribute student enrollment among the District’s elementary schools and facilitate students attending their neighborhood schools.

Next year, in the fall of 2019-20, kindergarten-4th grade students in transition neighborhoods may be attending new neighborhood schools, including the newly constructed Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary. Students entering grades 5-8 and students enrolled in Stevenson Elementary or Mistral Elementary in 2019-20 will not be affected.

Students currently in transitional kindergarten through third grade in affected neighborhoods will be impacted by a change in attendance area. The few exemptions will be younger siblings of 2019-20 fifth-graders in these transition neighborhoods who have the option of staying at their current school for the 2019-20 year only and students currently enrolled at Stevenson Elementary and Mistral Elementary.

Parents received information by mail and email last week. You were notified if your student in transitional kindergarten through third grade will be affected by a change in school attendance area. No action needs to be taken by you at this time.

In the coming months, the District and school communities will be working to ensure student transitions to new neighborhood schools are as smooth as possible. Please visit www.mvwsd.org/transitions for information about welcome and informational events for parents and children.

For questions about boundaries and residency, please see www.mvwsd.org/residency or call 650-526-3500. On this webpage, you may view the 2019-20 school boundaries map and use the SchoolLocator to search for your home address.

We appreciate your patience and support during this process.

Project Cornerstone Update

Stevenson Families,
Last week, our Project Cornerstone parent readers had a chance to share classroom experiences from the October lessons and discussed this month's book, Simon's Hook by Karen Gedig Burnett. It is the story of a boy named Simon who is teased because he is having a “bad hair day”. This story helps children recognize that there are many positive, empowering ways to respond to teasing. Simon learns specific techniques to empower himself and avoid being victimized by teasing behaviors.
Grandma Rose, a friendly neighbor, offers Simon five strategies to keep him from taking the bait:
1. Do little or nothing! Don’t react!
2. Pretend to agree with the hook.
3. Change the subject; distract the student doing the teasing.
4. Laugh at the hook and make a joke of it.
5. Stay away from students you know to be hurtful.

Each of these strategies gives our students another important skill in protecting themselves from being hurt. The children love this story and will continue to use the language from the book all year if we support and encourage them to do so. Younger children may need practice identifying what a hook (tease), and 'taking the bait' is, while older children benefit from recognizing the strategies that are most effective for themselves. All children need to remember that this is just part of their toolbox and that they should know who their "Grandma Rose" (caring adult) is and when they need more support.

At home, ask your child if they've ever caught the bait, or swam free from a hook. Squabbles with siblings at home can be a great opportunity for your child(ren) to practice the strategies they've learned and get real time feedback when they might be 'biting' or 'fishing.'

When you hear about or observe teasing, use the language in the book, like taking the bait. Encourage your child to problem-solve by asking:
“Did you bite?”
How can you swim free and avoid that hook?”
Encourage students to see themselves as free fish with many choices, no matter the hooks they encounter.
If you have any questions about the message of this book or want more information about how to supplement this lesson with additional books/activities at home, feel free to check in with your child's classroom reader or myself.
Best,
Lauren Matheou
Project Cornerstone Vice Chair
