3/13/19

Dear Stevenson Families,

Please make sure to join us this Friday for our first official Friday Fever in the MUR.  First grade will do a presentation on resilience and our kinders will do an encore to their song on community.  We are all very excited about using our new MUR.

Construction Updates

Today, the temporary fence around the grass in the field area came down and the kids had fun moving between the play structure and grass area.  Over the next month, contractors will start to install an additional playground behind our current play structure as well as landscape the area at the back of the school.

Our garden beds are full of organic soil and ready for student planting.  The two areas between the classrooms will have additional garden beds as well as our native garden.  Over the next few months our garden committee will be working with Living Classroom to plant the native garden.

Attached, below to this note are the final plans for the fencing that will be around Stevenson.  If there are any questions please feel free to reach out.

Social Emotional Learning

Please join us to discuss social emotional learning at Stevenson on Monday, March 25 at 8:30 am.  A team of teachers has been working to create a scope and sequence of how our students learn about the Stevenson’s values of community, respect, innovation, resilience, and collaboration while integrating Responsive Classroom, Project Cornerstone, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).  As a school, we realize that social emotional learning is a large part of what we do but we do not have a good way to communicate everything we do. The team of teachers has been working to create a framework to share what it is that happens at each grade level and we are looking for your feedback.

Principal’s Coffee Tomorrow

As promised tomorrow I will be hosting an additional principal’s coffee to discuss how teachers are trained in the event of an intruder.  Please feel free to join us in the library at 8:30 am.

5thGrade Promotion

This year the high school district has asked the middle schools to adjust their promotion time to allow parents enough time to get to the high school ceremony.  To accommodate the shift in time at the middle schools all elementary schools will be shifting their promotion day. Stevenson will host our 5th grade promotion on Thursday, June 6th.

Warm Regards,

Rebecca Westover

Principal

Women’s Day

Please join us for a wonderful event next month as we celebrate the second annual MVPD Women’s Day event. It has been renamed to #SheCan to incorporate and include all who would like to participate, regardless of age.

Much like last year, the goal of this event is to encourage and inspire girls – middle and high school-age specifically – as well as young women to consider the possibility of a career in fields such as public safety and public service and all that these career have to offer.  We are thrilled to announce that the Mountain View Fire Department, the City of Mountain View, the 129th Rescue Wing, and Girls on the Run will be joining us this year.

Here are more of the event details

·         Date: Saturday, March 30th, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

·         Where: MVPD front lot, auditorium and foyer

·         Who: You, and your family!

To learn more about the ‘why’ behind this event, check out our mission statement!

We have a vision.  A vision as police officers, firefighters and government leaders to connect with women and girls as mentors, advocates and sponsors. Out of this vision came the slogan #SeeStrongBeStrong.  We believe that when young women and girls see what’s possible in any career they are encouraged, inspired and supported to strive to find their highest potential. We want all young women and girls to know that they can become anything they set their minds to.  Because they are stronger, smarter and more capable than they think, and WE HAVE THEIR BACK.

We believe that when we engage with young women and girls and tell our stories of perseverance and resilience we are planting seeds of the same kind for them.  We understand that when men stand up with women and girls, we are partners in equality and share the same dream of a better world.

We created this event to inspire, empower and embolden our female youth to see themselves as future leaders in public safety and public service.  #SheCan, sponsored by the Mountain View Police Department, will offer an inside look at the joy and purpose behind the work public servants do in the world.
