Stevenson Weekly News Letter 4/3/19

4/03/19/Users/mayala/Desktop/StevensonStingray-2.png LOGO.png

Dear Stevenson Families,

I wanted to take a moment to thank the community for all of the volunteer hours you have put in this year in every form.  Our school would not be the same without you and your ideas, time, contributions, and care. When teachers, students, and parents walk on campus the feeling of community permeates our interactions.

Researchers have been studying the effects parent attitudes and actions have on their children's academic success for more than 30 years. The results have been consistent. Anne Henderson and Nancy Berla summed it up in their book A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement, which reviewed the existing research: "When parents are involved in their children's education at home, they do better in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school and the schools they go to are better."

We often have discussions over topics that we are passionate about but the underlying theme to our discussions is the love of children and their wellbeing.  Thank you again.

State Testing

Each year our third, fourth and fifth grade students participate in State testing over a period of three weeks.  Stevenson’s students will be testing during the weeks of April 29th, May 6th, and May 13th.  All grade levels will participate in ELA and Math and 5thgrade will take a science assessment.  The tests have been spread across sever weeks to give students breaks.

When testing starts for the upper grades please remind your child that the test is simply a way for them to show off what they have learned and tell us what areas we need to review with them.

Garden Planting Postponed

Our native garden planting day has been postponed.  We will provide more information once we are ready to plant.

Warm Regards,

Rebecca Westover

Principal

From the County:

Measles notice

On March 26, the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department confirmed one case of measles in an international traveler visiting the county. Individuals who are not immune to measles AND who visited certain sites may be at risk of developing measles due to exposure.

Santa Clara County benefits from very high rates of vaccination against measles. Most people received two doses of measles vaccine (“MMR vaccine”) as children and are protected. However, parents of unvaccinated children, unvaccinated adults, and those with weakened immune systems are advised to review the list of sites and times individuals may have been exposed below. Children at risk may include infants who are too young to receive the vaccine, children who cannot receive measles vaccine due to weakened immune system (for example, due to organ transplant or chemotherapy), or other unvaccinated children.

For a list of exposure sites and more information, visit https://www.sccgov.org/sites/phd/news/Pages/measles-3-26-19.aspx. If you have concerns or questions about your or your child's health, please contact your healthcare provider.
