Dear Stevenson Families,

Engagement Facilitator

Next year Stevenson will continue to have Joey Ordonez as our School and Community Engagement facilitator.   We are excited that he will continue to be with us. Like in years past, he will split is time with two other schools.  School Community Engagement Facilitators (SCEF) focus on students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged and/or English learners. These professionals work to organize parent education, provide translation services, and support positive student behavior.

Garden Work Day

Please join us on Saturday, May 4th, from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. to plant our native garden area. There will be light refreshments.

Playground Addition

The playground addition will start on Monday, May 6th. The contractor would like to hit the ground running, and will most likely start to put up safety fencing on Monday. Attached is a diagram with the areas that will be fenced off.

Social Emotional Progressions (written by Gayle Dyer)

At Stevenson, we realize that social emotional learning is an integral part of education.  To reflect this priority, a team of teachers created a scope and sequence of how Stevenson’s values of Community, Respect, Innovation, Resilience and Collaboration are integrated into our daily practices.

To create these social emotional progressions, the team met for a total of 18 hours over three planning days.  We started by researching other schools’ social emotional learning and service learning progressions. We also studied the social justice standards put out by the organization Teaching Tolerance. While discussing these examples, we realized that we wanted to root our social emotional learning scope and sequence in our core values. We identified three big ideas from each of our values. For example, under the core value Community, the three big ideas are Responsibilities to Myself, Responsibilities to Others, and Responsibilities to My Community.

From these big ideas, we wrote driving questions for social emotional learning at each grade level. For example, one question each kindergartener will focus on for the big idea Responsibilities to Others under the core value Community is “How can I be a caring friend?” whereas each fifth grader will ask “How can I interact in a way that acknowledges others’ perspectives?”

Along the way, teachers and parents had a chance to reflect on the progressions and give feedback. Team members presented the social emotional progressions to the staff during a staff meeting and grade level team meetings. Parents also had a chance to ask questions and give feedback at a parent meeting held by the team. We then used the feedback to finalize the progressions.

Once completed, we shared the final social emotional learning progressions with the staff. As a staff we discussed ways to share these progressions with the Stevenson community and other outside interested parties. A few of the ways we plan to disseminate this information are to post the progressions on our website and introduce them at meetings such as Kinder Information Nights and Parent Education. Teachers also plan on addressing different big ideas and driving questions at Classroom Meetings.

Moving forward, our teachers will use these social emotional progressions alongside content standards as they prepare lessons. Attached you will find a copy of our working document.

Warm Regards,

Rebecca Westover

Principal

MVEF

MVEF, together with numerous educational foundations throughout the Bay Area, is recognizing May 9th as a day to Stand Up for Public Schools.  Our public schools are integral to the development of our future leaders and citizens, and their excellence is dependent on every child, at every school, having access to a competitive, well-rounded education.

If you have not donated this school year to MVEF, please consider doing so today.  Your child has access to art, music, science, field trips, athletics and more thanks to parents like you who generously donate.  CodeRev has committed to matching $1000 for first-time donations this May. Help us reach our annual goal to raise $750,0000 to get this matching donation, and support your child and every child. Mvef.org/donate.

Mvef.org/donate.

On-Campus Before- and Afterschool  Programs Registering Students Now!

On-campus before- and afterschool care programs registering students now

We know that finding reliable, high-quality, affordable childcare is a challenge for many of our families and staff members. Increasing these offerings at our schools to meet demand has been a priority for MVWSD. On campus, our schools host several long-standing programs -- Beyond the Bell and the YMCA Silicon Valley Before and Aftercare --  in addition to a new one planned to open this fall, Right at School.

Right at School is a fee-based, nationally-recognized before- and afterschool program held every day that school is in session, from 6:30 AM until 6 PM, plus drop-in and school break care. It is planned for all MVWSD schools, including middle schools and the new Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary. Right at School presents experiential two-week science enrichment curriculum units, such as “Icky Experiments,” “Page to Stage,” and “Young Detectives.” The program incorporates physical movement, outdoor time and homework completion. It offers 10% sibling discount, 25% discount for free and reduced lunch families and flexible 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 day pricing options.

A parent information meeting for the new Right at School program has been scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 in the Graham Middle School multi-use room (1175 Castro St.).  This meeting will help answer any questions you have about the program. The meeting is not mandatory. You may also go to www.rightatschool.com for registration and this webpage for information and fees.
