Project Cornerstone Update
Stevenson Families,
Last week, our Project Cornerstone parent readers had a chance to share classroom experiences from the October lessons and discussed this month's book, Simon's Hook by Karen Gedig Burnett. It is the story of a boy named Simon who is teased because he is having a “bad hair day”. This story helps children recognize that there are many positive, empowering ways to respond to teasing. Simon learns specific techniques to empower himself and avoid being victimized by teasing behaviors.
Grandma Rose, a friendly neighbor, offers Simon five strategies to keep him from taking the bait:
1. Do little or nothing! Don’t react!
2. Pretend to agree with the hook.
3. Change the subject; distract the student doing the teasing.
4. Laugh at the hook and make a joke of it.
5. Stay away from students you know to be hurtful.
Each of these strategies gives our students another important skill in protecting themselves from being hurt. The children love this story and will continue to use the language from the book all year if we support and encourage them to do so. Younger children may need practice identifying what a hook (tease), and 'taking the bait' is, while older children benefit from recognizing the strategies that are most effective for themselves. All children need to remember that this is just part of their toolbox and that they should know who their "Grandma Rose" (caring adult) is and when they need more support.
At home, ask your child if they've ever caught the bait, or swam free from a hook. Squabbles with siblings at home can be a great opportunity for your child(ren) to practice the strategies they've learned and get real time feedback when they might be 'biting' or 'fishing.'
When you hear about or observe teasing, use the language in the book, like taking the bait. Encourage your child to problem-solve by asking:
-
“Did you bite?”
-
How can you swim free and avoid that hook?”
-
Encou
-
rage students to see themselves as free fish with many choices, no matter the hooks they encounter.
If you have any questions about the message of this book or want more information about how to supplement this lesson with additional books/activities at home, feel free to check in with your child's classroom reader or myself.
Best,
Lauren Matheou

Dear Stevenson Families,
We will be starting a new electronic visitor/volunteer sign in process. Instead of signing in on our paper binder, you will be able to show your State Issued ID card at the kiosk and have a visitor badge printed for you. There will be an extra step the first time you sign in because the system will require a form of ID, such as a driver’s license; however, it will remember your information for the next time you sign in.
The new system will increase security by alerting staff to any potential concerns, as well as improve the accuracy of the sign-in process. Please give yourself a few extra minutes before your next shift to get to know our new system!
Executive Functioning
A topic that has come up frequently is executive functioning and impulse control. It is important to know that executive functioning develops at different rates in different children/adolescents. Every child is working on individual skills at their own pace so there is a wide range of abilities that are observed in the classroom. If you are interested in reading more attached is a link to a few articles. Link one, link two

Rebecca Westover, Ed.D.
