Mountain View Whisman School District

We Are Fighting the Flu!

Our schools are seeing more cases of flu in both staff and students. With seasonal flu circulating at our schools and in the community, here are a few reminders about what you should do.

·     If your child has flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose), keep him or her home until they no longer have a fever without taking any fever reducing medication for at least 24 hours.  If your child has other health issues, you may want to call your health care provider for advice.

·     Drink a lot of liquid (such as juice, water, Pedialyte ®, broth).

·     Keep him or her comfortable. Rest is important.

·     For fever, sore throat, and muscle aches, you can use fever-reducing medicines that your doctor recommends.

·     Use good health habits such as covering coughs and/or sneezes in sleeves, or to cover coughs/sneezes with tissues.  Wash hands often and keep them away from your face.

·     Keep tissues close and have a trash bag within reach for disposing of used tissues.

·     Don’t go to school, daycare, or public places if you are sick.

·     If someone in your home is sick, keep him or her away from family members who are not sick.

Be watchful for emergency warning signs that might indicate you need to seek emergency medical care:

·     Fast breathing or trouble breathing

·     Bluish or gray skin color

·     Not drinking enough fluids

·     Not waking up or not interacting

·     Feeling extremely irritable

·     Not urinating

·     Your symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

All public schools receiving state funding are required to prepare and distribute a SARC (School Accountability Report Card). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about each school. SARCs are published each year and contain data from the previous school year.

There are several ways to view your school’s SARC:

  • Visit the MVWSD elementary schools’ and middle schools’ webpages on www.mvwsd.org and click on your school’s SARC links, for both English and Spanish.

  • Go to the CDE Find a SARC Web page. This CDE Web page provides actual SARC reports or SARC Web links to the school or district website where the school's SARC is located.

  • If you would like to obtain a printed copy in Spanish or English, please see your child’s school.

Project Cornerstone

This month, Project Cornerstone readers had the choice of reading Mr. Peabody's Apples or Trouble Talk.  Both books reveal the power words have through the spreading of gossip and rumors.  The goals from this lesson include:

Develop and maintain friendships with healthy talk.

Empower each student to be a friendship role model.

Learn how to make a genuine apology.

Stop and THINK. (Is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind?)

Be an UPstander!

By teaching our children the value and power of healthy talk versus trouble talk we create a stronger school community where all students feel safe and included.

In today’s technological world, rumors can be spread anonymously and cause wide, irreparable damage. We must make choices to avoid causing harm as digital citizens. To learn how to help your kids navigate this online world, visit the website of Common Sense Media at www.commonsensemedia.org In the parent’s section, you will find videos, tips and common sense ways to support your child(ren).
