03.03.22

Dear Stingray Parents and Guardians,

My heart has been heavy seeing the impact the invasion of Ukraine has had on families.  We understand that these are very challenging times for our students, staff, and parents. Our district has gathered resources to guide our staff and parents when discussing this conflict with children. Stevenson will continue to focus on promoting a safe and welcoming school environment by modeling respect and valuing the diversity of our community.

Read Across America Day!

Yesterday, Wednesday, March 2, was National Read Across America Day. One of the ways that our school celebrated was with your instructional coach, Danielle Lyons, providing read alouds to our students at recess and lunch. Our school librarian, Sarah Donahue, also collected books that students were able to choose from and keep!

No Open House Events This Year

Our schools will not be holding Open House events on March 30 and 31, as we traditionally do. COVID precautions prevent us from bringing many additional people on site, and we are not able to provide a robust virtual Open House experience.

We certainly will miss seeing all of the amazing work from our students and teachers, and look forward to a time we can gather to celebrate students’ work.

Sincerely,

Ryan Santiago

Principal, Stevenson Elementary

FAN-tastic Friday Staff!

The month of February is National Random Acts of Kindness Day! In celebration of random acts of kindness, Mr. Santiago and Mrs. Lyons will be randomly picking 4 staff members to highlight each Friday from now to the end of the year. This week the 4 staff members picked at randomly were:

  1. Ms. Lauren Alessio, 3rd grade teacher

  2. Ms. Wilson, PE teacher

  3. Ms. Leeanne, Food Service

  4. Ms. Sheila, Noon Duty Supervisor

Please feel welcome to join us in filling their buckets and sending acts of kindness their way! If you have free time, have your student(s) draw them a picture or write them a note. These FAN-tastic staff members will surely appreciate it!

English Language Advisory Committee

Stevenson’s next school ELAC meeting is today, Thursday, March 3rd at 5:00pm. Please use this link to register and attend.

Update on Mask Mandate

Even though the state will be downgrading face-mask requirements to a strong recommendation for indoor areas (with some exceptions) beginning on March 12, our students will still be required to wear masks for the near future. To learn more about the timeline and factors MVWSD is considering to determine when/if we make changes to the mask requirement, please click here.

Lost and Found

The Lost & Found rack is once again overflowing with clothes and other items (water bottles; lunch boxes; etc.).  We will place all of them outside the front of the school every day for the rest of the week.  Please stop by to check if anything belongs to your student(s).  Anything not picked up by 3:30 P.M. on Friday, March 4th. will be donated to charity.

PACT FOUNDATION UPDATES

PACT Pals logistics

PACT Pals starts this week. Logistics are mostly the same as last time. Please read pactpals.org carefully.

One difference: If your child attends Right at School, they should go directly to the front gate, not to Right at School. Exceptions are Thursday K (Soccer and Tennis coaches will pick up Ks from their rooms) and Tennis #2 (RAS will bring children to Tennis #2).

If you signed up for math and your child attends an after-school program, please send them the login info.

For Tennis, please make sure your child knows if they’re Tennis #1 (right after school) or Tennis #2 (1:35pm). Last time, a bunch of Tennis #2 kids were in Tennis #1.

PACT Pals are independent after-school programs and not affiliated with Stevenson Elementary school. Vendors are solely responsible for the children during class time, not Stevenson Elementary school or PACT Foundation. Please contact vendors directly for any questions.

Parent Ed Refresher Course

The Parent Education committee hopes you're as excited as we are about the impending return of parent volunteering! We're planning a brief, informal review session to be held the weekend after Winter Break. Here's what you need to know:

  • Two sessions will be held:

    • Saturday, 3/5 from 2:00-4:00 PM

    • Sunday, 3/6 from 4:00-6:00 PM

  • Everyone is invited! We know it's been a while, so anyone who wants a refresher is welcome to attend.

  • For new parents, the first hour of this session will provide overview focused on volunteering. The second hour will be reserved for Q&A (and likely some general socializing).

  • We don't have a weekday timeslot because we're meeting in person! We're planning to be outdoors on the school campus, weather permitting. Parents will need to wear masks and adhere to COVID health and safety protocols.

We hope to see many of you there. In case you couldn't make it to the training sessions in the fall, or if you want to review, the virtual format allowed us to record the material for posterity:

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Calming Your Mind

When we feel stressed, our minds tend to jump to the past (I should have...) or to the future (What if...?). The problem is that we cannot change the past nor control the future. Focusing on the present can help us take control of our current situation and help us feel calmer and more relaxed.

Watch this video to learn more about how mindfulness can help you (or your child) be more present and relaxed.

To calm your (or your child’s) mind:

  1. Look around you, and name five things you see. Pick one object, and describe what it looks like, what color, what size, and what shape it is.

  2. Look for four things you can touch. Pick one of those items to touch, and describe how it feels.

  3. Name three things that you can hear. At first, it might seem that there is not much to hear, but listen carefully. Focus on one sound, and describe it.

  4. Look for two things you can smell. Focus on one smell, and describe it.

  5. Find one thing you can taste. Focus on the taste and describe it.

You can repeat these steps every time you feel stressed to come back to the present moment.
