February 13, 2025
Dear Stingray Parents and Guardians,
I'm writing to you today not just as your interim principal, but as someone who cares deeply about every student and family in our school and district community. I know many of you are feeling concerned about the recent changes to immigration enforcement policies, and I want to speak directly to your hearts.
At Stevenson, and across all Mountain View Whisman schools, we are committed to maintaining safe, welcoming spaces where students can focus on learning. This isn't just a statement - it's backed by what we do:
-
Our schools do not collect or maintain data about immigration status and will not start
-
Student information cannot and will not be shared without proper legal authorization
-
Immigration officials are not allowed on campus without a valid judicial warrant
-
Every student has a right to education, regardless of immigration status
Please keep bringing your children to school every day. Their education is a right that no one can take away, and their presence here makes our community stronger. If you're feeling anxious or have questions, my door is always open. Our wonderful teachers, counselors, and staff are here to support you too.
To all our families: we are #BetterTogether, not just at Stevenson, but across our entire district. Every school in Mountain View Whisman stands united in protecting and supporting ALL of our families. Your children's well-being and education remain our highest priority.
We stand united with all Mountain View Whisman schools in our commitment to protecting every student's right to education and every person’s right to safety and dignity.
In service,
Megan Pohlman, Interim Principal

Notes from the Counselor
At Stevenson Elementary School, supportive discipline practices are centered around restoration. This approach focuses on understanding different perspectives, addressing the needs of those affected, and working toward a resolution that fosters mutual understanding. Our teachers, School Counselor, and At-Risk Intervention Specialist (ARIS), play a key role in implementing these practices. Students facing disciplinary actions are engaged in reflective activities such as writing apology letters, documenting incidents, discussing alternative choices for the future, and open communication between all parties involved. These practices reinforce the importance of empathy, and models constructive conversations. Restorative practices align with the school's expectations, ensuring consistency in conflict resolution efforts among all staff and volunteers. By framing discipline as a learning opportunity, Stevenson Elementary fosters a supportive environment where students develop accountability, understanding, and positive decision-making skills. If you have questions or would like additional information about our supportive discipline practices, please contact our front office.

SEL Curriculum Pilot & Community Review
Our Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum Committee has reached a major milestone! Since September 2024, our team of educators, administrators, and community members has worked to narrow 100+ curriculum options to two high-quality finalists. Now, we are piloting these programs in classrooms to determine the best fit for our students.
-
Second Step Pilot: January 13 – February 14, 2025
-
Character Strong Pilot: February 24 – April 4, 2025
We Need Your Feedback!
As we refine our SEL curriculum, we invite teachers, staff, and families to review and provide input at one of our Community Review Sessions at the MVWSD District Office (Conference Room C, 1400 Montecito Ave., Mountain View, CA).
Community Review Sessions:
-
March 13, 2025
-
March 20, 2025
These sessions provide a chance to learn about both curricula, share your insights, and help shape the future of SEL in our district. Can’t attend? Email Karin Jinbo to review the materials.

Better Together: February
Black History Month provides MVWSD with a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the rich contributions and achievements of African Americans while fostering a deeper sense of community among our students, staff, and families. By learning about influential Black leaders, innovators, and community helpers - from local civil rights activists to Black educators, doctors, and entrepreneurs who shaped our neighborhood - students develop a broader understanding of how diverse voices and experiences have strengthened our community. Last week, the Board of Trustees passed a resolution honoring February as Black History Month. For more information about Better Together, visit mvwsd.org/BetterTogetherMVWSD.
