12.09.2020

Dear Stingray Parents and Guardians,

Did you know that our weekly art, music, and Living Classroom garden lessons are made possible because of generous parent support each year to MVEF (Mountain View Educational Foundation)? Our MVEF also provides STEAM professional development and other programs for our students!

Double your Donation with the MVEF December Challenge Grant. Throughout December, every dollar donated will be matched dollar for dollar up to $47,000, through the MVEF December Challenge Grant.  The December Challenge Grant has been made possible by generous MVEF donors who are challenging you to join them in supporting MVEF. Donate today to get your donation matched by this challenge!

https://www.mvef.org/donate

If your company has a matching gift program, you can triple your impact by donating this month!

Each and every year we rely on generous donors like you to help MVEF fund programming and experiences at every school in the district, ensuring that your child and every child has an inspiring, well-rounded education.

Every dollar donated makes a difference and allows the district-wide programs to be funded which is especially important now, during remote learning.  It takes donations of every size for MVEF to reach their annual goal of $800,000.

These are the programs and activities MVEF is supporting during remote learning because of donors like you:

  • Music and Art: CSMA weekly online art and music classes for TK-5th, instrument purchase and repair, and art supply kits for all elementary schools
  • Science:
    • Living Classroom environmental education for elementary and middle school.
    • Environmental Programs taught interactively for the 4th and 5th grades
    • Middle school science supplies for teachers
    • TechSmart coding programs from 3rd grade through middle school (through a grant from Tides Foundation)
    • Training for Elementary STEAM teachers with Discovery Education
  • Additional Middle School funding to support the Elective Wheel classes, redesigned for distance learning!
    • Padlet licenses for teachers
    • Online apps (Smart Music, Flat.io, and SoundTrap) for Music Appreciation classes, Band, Choir, and Orchestra
    • Music books
    • Art Supplies
    • Robotics
    • Tech Smart coding (through a grant from Tides Foundation)

Even through distance learning, your donations to MVEF continue to fund art, music, and science for every student at every school!

Thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,

Ryan Santiago

Principal, Stevenson Elementary

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for January 11-15. Teachers will be reaching out to parents to schedule you your parent teacher conference. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers and discuss your child’s progress during distance learning and an opportunity to discuss strengths and areas of focus to support your child social emotional and academically.

Prior to conferences, parents can access their child’s iReady Diagnostic 2 report when we return from the Holiday Break on January 5, 2021. Steps for accessing PowerSchool Parent Portal i-Ready Reports are here

Our teachers look forward to continuing to partner with our parents to support our students.

i-Ready Diagnostics

Yesterday, our students started the second round of i-Ready Diagnostic Assessments.  Next week, students will begin the Reading Diagnostic and the week of December 14th, students will take the Math Diagnostic. Here are a few friendly reminders about our i-Ready Diagnostic assessments:

  • The assessment is adaptive. It is okay if your child does not know how to answer some of the questions. They can try their best and move on to the next question.
  • Remind your children to work out their problems (solve problems on paper) and pace themselves.
  • Please do not help your you child solve or workout the problems during the assessment
  • Encourage your child to stay steady, focused, and do his/her best.

Thank you for your support and partnership with our Distance Learning and assessments.

Next Round of Materials Distribution - January 14th and 15th

Our students continue to have the opportunity to attend art lessons provided by Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) as part of their school day through a partnership between the MVWSD, the Mountain View Education Foundation (MVEF), and CSMA.

To support these lessons, your child will be provided with art supplies over the course of the school year. Some general supplies came at the beginning of the school year like crayons, erasers, pencils and glue sticks.  The next set of supplies, a sketchbook and construction paper, are ready for distribution.

Our school will be distributing art supplies in addition to any material provided by classroom teachers on January 14th and 15th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.

Also, please join us in thanking MVEF for their generous donation of these supplies for our elementary students.

Stevenson Equity Working Group

We are excited to share that we are launching more intentional efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion this year!  We want to create an equity working group and begin to explore these important issues in our own community. We will align with the district efforts, as well as explore our own unique needs, as we discussed at the PACT Foundation board meeting. At the last board meeting, the PACT Foundation adopted the MVWSD Resolution Denouncing Racism and Supporting Equity, Safety, and Well-being of Black People. We really want to be more proactive in our efforts.

Please take a few minutes and fill out this survey if you are interested in getting involved or providing input. We would love to hear from you.

Better Together: Together we can appreciate our abilities

In December, we are celebrating Abilities Awareness Month. To honor our commitments in moving towards equity and inclusion, help us bring the voices of people with diverse abilities into your classroom or homes, and create a learning environment that rejects ableism. From lessons on art, activism and physical disabilities to education about new developments in Universal Design, these resources will help you and your children embrace diverse abilities and understand the injustices people with disabilities often encounter. Together, we can appreciate our abilities and celebrate our common humanity. See the attached graphics or view them on https://www.mvwsd.org/bettertogethermvwsd
