DISTRICT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dear Parents/Staff,

We are very much looking forward to the coming school year and welcoming all our students and staff back for in-person learning, five days a week. Please read the entire message below for important back to school information. Welcome back!

COVID Safety

While cases are down and many of us are vaccinated, we will still remain vigilant about student and staff health and safety. Since we are an elementary school district with younger learners, many of our children are not vaccinated. We will follow the guidance of the CDC, the County of Santa Clara and the California Department of Health.

Highlights are:

* Social distancing will be 3 feet between student desks. Six feet of social distancing is required between adults and students.

* Virus safety protocols will continue, including masks for all students and staff members, hand sanitization, and bathroom, and lunch protocols.

* Parents and staff will complete the daily, at-home symptom screener (OKtoReopen) and submit their results through that platform before their arrival to school. Reminders are sent by email and text early each school day. If you have not used OktoReopen, please familiarize yourself with these videos: https://vimeo.com/521538560 (English) and https://vimeo.com/524450668 (Spanish)

* Sick individuals who test positive will be quarantined as needed and outlined by the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department. COVID quarantine parameters have been adjusted for the coming school year, based on masking and vaccinations. Please see updated guidance here.

* Parents will not enter campus during arrival and dismissal. Pick up and drop off will happen at gates/designated areas.

* Children and parents cannot be on campus while students are still present, such as after hours while aftercare programs are in session.

Masks Required For All Students/Staff

A public health order from the California Department of Public Health outlines that everyone, including those who are fully vaccinated, is required to wear a mask while indoors at a school campus. In addition to vaccination, masking is our most effective strategy to protect ourselves and others against COVID-19 and other more transmissible variants. MVWSD will be requiring masks for outdoor activities such as recess and physical education in alignment with CDC recommendations. Staff members are required to be masked on school grounds when working/meeting with other adults (unless 100% of the adults present are vaccinated).

Lunch, physical education, recess and music

Meals: During times of unmasked eating, students will be socially distanced to the greatest extent possible and outdoor seating areas will be maximized.

Recess and PE: MVWSD will be requiring masks for outdoor activities such as recess and physical education in alignment with CDC recommendations. Masking will allow students to move more freely between play areas and friend groups.

Vocal and aerosol-producing instrumental music: MVWSD will proceed with regular classes this year.  Students will be socially distanced to the greatest extent possible and outdoor instruction areas will be maximized. Additionally, MVWSD will provide instrument bell covers and specialized music masks to reduce the possibility of COVID transmission.

First Day of School is a Minimum Day

The first day of school, Wednesday, Aug. 11, is a minimum day, meaning students will be dismissed earlier according to the schedule. Thursday, Aug. 12 is on the Thursday schedule (earlier than typical release). Friday, Aug. 13 will be a full school day for students.

Student Orientation Events

Schools will be hosting orientation activities during the first week of school to ensure that students are familiarized with their campus and get to know their peers, especially after a long time away. More details will be coming soon from your site principal.

How to Find Out Your Child’s Teacher (PowerSchool)

In order to meet social distancing requirements for large events, there will be no in-person class posting events on campuses. Class placement information will be available to parents online beginning Monday, August 9 at 8 a.m. Your child’s class placement for the 2021-22 school year will be available for viewing on the PowerSchool Parent Portal: https://ps.mvwsd.org/public/ under the My Schedule link. If you have difficulty signing in to PowerSchool, please call your school office.

School Supplies

Basic school supplies and textbooks are furnished for all students. Donations of items and funds for this purpose are appreciated, but not required. You will receive information from your school on whether specific school supplies are needed. Sharing of supplies between students will be limited.

School meals are free

MVWSD will continue to provide free meals to all students in the 2021-22 school year as part of California’s universal meal program. Breakfast and lunches are available daily.  Menus and nutritional analysis can be found on https://www.mvwsd.org/nutrition. There will be a vegetarian option each day. Gluten free lunches are not available. A count of those taking school lunch will be taken at the beginning of the school day. Students may bring their own self-contained lunches if desired.

Apply at EzSchool Meals to help MVWSD receive additional funding to support students who are in need, and may help your family.

This Free and Reduced Price Meals benefit is not limited to meals only. If your child is eligible for free and/or reduced-price meals, your family could get medical benefits, housing benefits, utilities benefits and more. Students who qualify for free and/or reduced-price meals may be eligible for P-EBT cards. The more applications your school gathers at the start of each school year, the more additional funding it can receive for all kinds of programs that help children at your school. If you are currently out of work, you may qualify and help your school, regardless of your financial situation. Apply at https://secure.ezmealapp.com/ or call your school office.

Transportation

The Mountain View Whisman School District Transportation Department provides transportation for students who are residents of Moffett and who are special education students. For COVID safety, masks will be required, bus windows will be open and a seating chart will be used. For more information, and to apply for a bus pass, please visit this web page.

Remote Independent Study offered

All students are expected to attend in-person instruction. However, students and families that feel in-person instruction compromises their health may elect to participate in a Remote Independent Study program as outlined in state law for the 2021-22 school year. Aspects of Remote Independent Study:

-MVWSD will likely use a third-party provider for Remote Independent Study learning.  This means students in this Remote Independent Study program will not be taught by a MVWSD teacher.

-As per the California Department of Education, the Remote Independent Study program will include daily live instruction for students in grades TK-3, opportunities for daily live instruction and at least weekly live instruction for grades 4-8.

-Parents may request a pupil/parent/educator conference meeting prior to enrollment in the independent study program.

-Students may return to MVWSD in-person learning within 5 days of their request, but students may not be placed in their neighborhood/choice school.

-Students with IEPs must have Independent Study included in their IEP to be enrolled in the Remote Independent Study program.

If you are interested in this option for your child for the coming school year, please attend the parent info session on Friday, August 6 at 1:30 pm on Zoom. To request more information, please complete the form here: http://mvw.sd/p07My.

Immunizations

Please understand that students are not allowed on campus, and will not receive teacher assignments/class schedule until their required vaccinations are completed.    Vaccinations (visit https://www.shotsforschool.org for the list) are required for school admission, and they are also crucial to prevent children from getting sick. Please schedule an appointment with your health care provider for a well-child visit and to review your child’s immunization record. Our Health Services team has been contacting parents/guardians to let them know what immunizations are missing. All documents, including vaccines, will need to be received and verified prior to the first day of school. For questions or help, please email [email protected].

Volunteer Guidelines

MVWSD will be allowing masked, vaccinated volunteers at school sites. Please note, in accordance with CDC and county guidelines for adults working with children, volunteers will be required to maintain a social distance of 6 feet from students. See the guidelines here.

Child Care

MVWSD partners with providers Right at School, YMCA and Newton to provide on-campus, fee-based childcare. There are also other community providers for afterschool care. Registration for these programs is happening now. Please click here for information on sessions, cost and registration.
