Dear Stingray Parents and Guardians,

Our staff is excitedly preparing for the start of a new school year! The first week of school, teachers and staff are preparing a warm welcome for our students and many fun activities to build school community, review our school procedures, and show our core values! This year we will have the theme of Stingrays being Bucket Fillers!

What is a bucket filler? This concept is based on the thought that everyone has an invisible bucket that holds her feelings. We all have an imaginary bucket. When our buckets are full, we feel great! When our buckets are empty we feel sad or hurt. We fill buckets when we say or do something kind to others. We dip from buckets when we say or do something that is not kind. Stingrays are Bucket Fillers!

Teacher Virtual Meet and Greets! - Monday 8/9 and Tuesday 8/10

Our teachers are really excited to meet the students in their classroom this year! Each teacher is hosting a Classroom Virtual Meet and Greet to welcome our Stingrays. Teachers will be sending an email with information and the Google Meet link on Monday morning. Please see the School Announcement section for the date and times each grade level is scheduled.

Stevenson Principal’s Coffee

Please join me this afternoon, Friday, August 6th at 4pm for our first principal’s coffee of the school year. During this meeting, I will be sharing updates and a time to answer questions about the new school year. I hope to see you there! Please use this link to register and attend.

I am looking forward to seeing all of our stingrays at school on Wednesday, August 11th!

Sincerely,

Ryan Santiago

Principal, Stevenson Elementary

Health and Safety

Masks for Students and Adults

All students and staff are required to wear masks while on campus. This includes both indoor and outdoor areas. Our staff has masks for students who forget them.  Mask breaks will be provided on an as needed basis. Please ensure your child knows how to properly wear a face mask.

OKtoReopen - Daily Health Screener

Each morning, parents will receive an email and text message early each school day from [email protected]. This online survey has four simple questions about your child's health. Please complete them and click submit (either by text or email). The screener needs to be completed first thing in the morning before children come on campus. Since it is so important for everyone's safety on campus, failure to consistently complete the screener will result in the child being moved to distance-learning.

Within the OK to reopen platform, parents can adjust the settings to receive text or email only. Additionally, questions can be answered for more than one child within the same window, using the drop-down menu at the top right. It is not necessary to download an OKtoReopen app.

The screener needs to be completed first thing in the morning BEFORE children come on campus. Since it is so important for everyone's safety on campus.

No Parents/Guests On Campus

Please note that at this time, to minimize exposure to our students and staff, no parents or guests are permitted on our campus.

Volunteers Update

At the August 3rd Board meeting, Trustees requested that staff update the MVWSD volunteer guidelines to include additional requirements.  MVWSD is working on a plan to allow masked, vaccinated volunteers at school sites. District staff will be bringing updated guidance in September.  Until the plan is approved by the Trustees, volunteers will not be allowed to assist teachers and staff on campus.

School Meals Are Free

MVWSD will continue to provide free meals to all students in the 2021-22 school year as part of California’s universal meal program.  Recess breakfast and lunches are available daily.  Menus and nutritional analysis can be found on https://www.mvwsd.org/nutrition. There will be a vegetarian option each day. Gluten-free lunches are not available. Students may bring their own self-contained lunches if desired.

Apply at EzSchool Meals to help MVWSD receive additional funding to support students who are in need, and may help your family.

This Free and Reduced Price Meals benefit is not limited to meals only. If your child is eligible for free and/or reduced-price meals, your family could get medical benefits, housing benefits, utilities benefits and more. Students who qualify for free and/or reduced-price meals may be eligible for P-EBT cards. The more applications your school gathers at the start of each school year, the more additional funding it can receive for all kinds of programs that help children at your school. If you are currently out of work, you may qualify and help your school, regardless of your financial situation. Apply at https://secure.ezmealapp.com/.

If you need help, our office staff is available to help you.  Please email Ms. Silvia McElyea at [email protected], Mrs. Evelyn Antunez at [email protected] or Mrs. Beatriz Claas at  [email protected]

Construction Update

Solar panels across the district will save MVWSD more than $500,000 a year and provide much-needed shade for students. The solar panels at Stevenson are currently in process of being constructed on the courtyard. The area around and the solar panels is fenced off for safety. Our teachers and school staff will be making sure students are safe and playing away from the fenced area. Teachers will also be discussing safe play around the construction area the first week of school with students. The fencing will be removed once the project is completed.

The fencing around Stevenson and Theuerkauf started over the summer. The next step in the process is to install the gates. The gates will be closed during the school day but will remain unlocked until the electronic locks can be installed.  A friendly reminder that the community will still have access to the field weekdays before 7:30am and after 4:00pm. The gates will also be unlocked on the weekends for field access.

Reporting Absences

Please call the office at (650) 903-6950 or email Rayland Asuncion at [email protected] and Renae Rhodes at  [email protected] to report an absence or late arrival.  Provide the following information: date of absence, student’s name, grade and room number, reason for absence, name and relationship of the person reporting the absence.

It will be a great help to our staff and other students and their families as we prepare for the 2021-22 school year.

MVWSD News

MVWSD Substitute Fair (This Saturday)

MVWSD is seeking substitutes. Please consider this flexible, fun, dynamic work that has a big impact on our students!

Please attend the employment fair on Saturday, August 7th from 8:00am to 11:30am at the Stevenson Elementary MUR. Participants will learn more about the position and can apply onsite. Applicants can also pre-submit at mvw.sd/sub.

Remote Independent Study

All students are expected to attend in-person instruction. However, students and families that feel in-person instruction compromises their health may elect to participate in a Remote Independent Study program as outlined in state law for the 2021-22 school year only.

Remote Independent Study learning will be provided to MVWSD students by Edgenuity, a third-party provider.  Please understand that this is not a distance learning school; it is independent study with virtual instruction. The amount of virtual instruction varies by grade level. Students will receive daily live instruction, but the daily schedule will not look like the Distance Learning program MVWSD offered in the 2020-21 school year. Please use this link for more information.
