Dear Stingray Parents and Guardians,
A friendly reminder to please take a few minutes to provide input on our District’s LCAP Survey (Local Control Accountability Plan). Your input will help guide our District’s 3-year plan that will also align with our District’s new Strategic Plan 2027. I will be presenting more information about our District’s LCAP at tomorrow’s English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) meeting. All community members are welcome to attend.
The month of February is Black History Month. I am thankful to work alongside Stevenson teachers, staff, and parents as we learn and partner together on having conversations about equity and inclusion. Over the past few months our staff has engaged in equity focused seminars and conversations on Black Lives Matter and Anti-Racist teaching with our district’s equity coach. Our teachers continue to collaborate and share ideas on how to have conversations with our students in the classroom. Please join our school community as we pay tribute and recognize the generations who struggle with adversity to achieve equity and also celebrate the achievements of African Americans. Equitable Access to Choice Schools
Stevenson Elementary and our school district are committed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for our students and our community. Tomorrow, Thursday, February 4th at 6pm, during the Board of Trustees meeting, the board will be hearing a presentation that provides an overview on research and recommendations of best practices in creating equitable access for choice schools.

English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) Meeting
Tomorrow, Thursday, February 4th at 5pm, Stevenson’s next English Language Advisory Committee will be meeting virtually. Principal Santiago will be sharing an update on Reopening of Schools, Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California) assessments. All community members are able to join our ELAC meetings. Please use this link to register in advance of the meeting. School Assemblies - Wednesday Wiggles and Wednesday (Friday) Fevers Coming Soon!
Starting next week, February 10th, we will be having fun and hosting Wednesday morning virtual assemblies! The whole school will be encouraged to attend just after their morning check-in with their classroom teacher. Students and staff will dance and move during the Wednesday Wiggles. Also, each month, we will host a Wednesday (Friday) Fever! Teachers will share the Zoom link in their Google Classroom during the morning meeting.

Parents: We want to hear from you! LCAP Survey
Our District is beginning its annual process of writing the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan). Your input from the survey will guide the development of our District’s three-year plan that will correspond with the first three years of the District’s new Strategic Plan 2027. These documents are the blueprints that guide all of the District’s work for the benefit of our students.

Materials Distribution
Stevenson hosts the next school-wide materials distribution next Thursday, February 11th and Friday, February 12th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm each day. A reminder that materials will vary from classroom to classroom based on teacher guidance.
We will continue with the same safety protocols as used in past distribution. See here for reference.

Filipina American author, and Newbery medal winner, Erin Entrada Kelly will be visiting us on Wednesday, February 10th at 9:30am!

Have a library book to return? Feel free to return any Stevenson School library books to the drop box, on the cart, directly outside of the front office, Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Black History Month
Even before children can talk, they are learning about the world and about race through the words and actions of others. Parents, teachers, and caregivers have the unique opportunity to frame their child's first attempts to understand and talk about race. Talking about race matters because (1) everyone has a racialized identity, (2) racialized identity significantly impacts a person's life, and (3) race is a defining social construct in America.
This Black History Month, use the Better Together infographic to begin racially-focused conversations with children acknowledging that conversations about race will look different for each family and classroom and there is no single way to talk to children about race. Have honest conversations with your students about the history of privilege and oppression as it relates to Black History and, where appropriate, connect this to local community and larger global issues.
Together, we can explore Black History. Together, we can become anti-racist.

Parent University: The Special Education Team - Who We Are and How We Support Our Schools and Students
Join us on Wednesday, February 24th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. for our next Parent University event: The Special Education Team - Who We Are and How We Support Our Schools and Students.
Arianna Mayes (Director) and Acantha Ellard (Coordinator) of MVWSD's Special Education Department will facilitate a panel discussion with Special Educators and professionals who support MVWSD schools and students. The discussion will include who and what the team does and how students are supported both in-person and during distance learning. Additionally, you can submit your own questions beforehand via this Google Form.
Spanish interpretation will be provided.

SCCOE’s Parent Engagement Program will present the “Keeping the Dream Alive” College and Career Readiness Virtual Event for 6th – 12th grade students and their parents.
